Greetings and Happy New Year to all Vermootens (and hangers-on!) I am a Vermooten by marriage. My husband, Vincent Henry Vermooten (known as Bill) was born in J-burg in 1938. His father was Dr Vincent [Davis] Vermooten, son of James Fokkens (aka Jakobus) and Susan Bridget Davis Vermooten. Dr V's siblings were Ian, Justine and Edith. Dr Vincent Vermooten received his MD at Johns Hopkins in America, and married Esther deBerdt Robins there. They lived in South Africa during the 30s; then returned to USA at the beginning of WWII, and stayed. Bill says that the only one of Jakobus's sibllings that he knows of was Octavius Septimus (so named because he was born on 8 September.) Bill and I have two children: Jessica Vermooten Kelley, and David Gerrit Vermooten. David is the proud possessor of a small brass box, engraved Gerrit Vermooten on the top, and Haarlem on the bottom. Dr Vermooten bought it in the Netherlands, sometime in the fifties or sixties, I think. It is most intriguing to hear from other Vermootens. For a long time, we thought that we were the only ones in the USA, although we now know that there are a few others. Please feel free to contact me at gvermoote@gmail.com if you wish. Bill is retired, and we live in Lawrence, Kansas, where Kansas University is located. Very best wished to all for 2010.

Hi Vermootens! My grandfather was Ds (Rev) Simon Vermooten after whom the big street east of Pretoria was named. His youngest and only living child, my 82 year-old father, Adriaan, stays with me in Pretoria. I taught Linguistics & Translation Studies at the Univ of South Africa for 26 years before taking early retirement at the end of 2007. I am now running a translation & interpreting agency full-time. I have an electronic copy of "Reisbeschrijving ..." (1884) in Dutch. This is a compilation of diary entries made by IH Vermooten when he left Brielle in the Netherlands on 25 March 1883 for South Africa. It was read over the radio (SABC) a good 20 years ago and is both informative & entertaining! I haven't yet completed the translation into Afrikaans and would like to translate this into English as well. The print quality of the original Dutch booklet is poor so it took me quite some time to correct all the errors after scanning it so now it is accessible to a wider readership. Let me know where I can post this.
